Blackcat Billboard Ideas

I’m currently working on designing a billboard for fredericktown school district – it’s a project meadow heights church is doing for the school. First I had to re-illustrate the low resolution blackcat that I was provided with. There’s gotta be a high-res version floating around somewhere – now I have my own – and it only took 12 hours to recreate.

One idea for the billboard

Variation of the last idea

Totally different idea – it already feels dated to me – almost like a late 80’s, early 90’s school t-shirt or something.

Anyone have some ideas for background textures/elements and or other ideas that could help these designs? I’m open to anything!

  1. Awesome job on the cat! In case you wanted feedback, I’m not a huge fan of the first idea with the half-cat leaning to the right and “home of the blackcats” written beside it. I can’t get over the thought that the poor animal is missing a leg and is therefore off-kilter somehow. Hope that helps!

  2. Those are some good ideas there. I personally lean towards seeing the whole cat, but I do like the idea of the name intruding in front of the cat in the first one, maybe get some more weight in on the right side to balance it a little more – heavier type. Perhaps the bracket thing is so big it cuts the billboard in two, the right side is black with reversed type, and the left is white with black cat?
And I think having the town name in there is nice too. Though I do think the middle one has good potential, maybe something with the type size and/or weight and color could bring the type and the cat together more, like it’s one thing, maybe it’s just black type, with the gold bracket thing separating them?
You might also try focusing just on the type first, get something that really works for you, then see how that cat might fit in. Then rethink it again and see about marrying the two.
That’s my 2 cents.. errr, maybe that was four cents….
    Anyway, hope that might help.
Looking good though man, Look forward to see what you end up with…
    later.
    doug.

  3. @Kai I agree – the angle is a little unsettling to me – I think angling anything in that direction doesn’t look too good, but I had to try it just to see what it would like. Sometimes when I can think of any good ideas I do something that doesn’t look ‘as’ good to get it out of my system. Thanks for the feedback! I need to subscribe to your blog – haven’t to this point.

  4. @Doug Thanks for the feedback. I like seeing the whole cat as well – it just takes so much space, and it’s very ‘sqaure’ so it doesn’t lend it self to being used more than a few ways.

I agree that I need more weight on the right side of the first one. That’s really what has been ‘getting me’ when laying it out. The cat is so dark and heavy that it either needs to be small or cropped to balance out. splitting the background in two is also a great idea!

All great feedback – that’s why I why I enjoyed working last summer – great art direction from the one and only Doug.

    Thanks Dude!
